HOLY FAMILY SCHOOL SPORTS PROGRAM

COACHES’ INFORMATION

 

The mission of Holy Family School is to nurture Christ-like behavior in one another. The Holy Family School Athletic Program strives to fulfill this mission by guiding the student athletes to develop good sportsmanship, teamwork, a spirit of healthy competition, and physical fitness; to acquire specific skills and strategies; and to have fun.

I. REQUIREMENTS TO SERVE AS COACHES AND/OR ASSISTANT COACHES

A. Willingness to support the mission of Holy Family Catholic School and the Parochial Athletic League and to fulfill all commitments to the players, the school, and the PAL.

B. Each coach and assistant coach must have fingerprint clearance (once) and must attend annually, presentations on Blood Pathogens and recognizing child abuse.

C. Knowledge of the sport to be coached and a desire to help the athletes improve.

D. Volunteer to serve as a coach or assistant coach

1. Every girls’ team will have at least one female coach or assistant coach

2. Every boys’ team will have at least one male coach or assistant coach

E. Agree to be punctual and present for all scheduled practices and games.

II. RESPONSIBILITIES OF COACHES

A. Be fully aware of and supportive of the Holy Family School requirements for student participation, for parental involvement, for team members, and for conflict resolution.

B. Attend the mandatory coaches meeting presented by the PAL.

1. Be fully acquainted with all PAL requirements for the sport and agree to observe them.

2. Observe PAL mandates and guidelines concerning playing time.

C. Be present for all tryouts for the team and al all meetings for the selection process.

1. All coaches of a specific level of a sport will attend all the tryouts for that sport. Each coach will numerically rate each player on a chart which will include sport-specific skills, attitude, ability, willingness to follow directions, and teamwork.

2. Coaches will meet, and the coaches of competitive teams will have first pick. Coaches of the recreational teams will select the remaining players.

3. The Athletic Director will approve the rosters and then present them to the Principal for final approval. A list of those who did not make the team must also be presented to the Principal for review.

4. Team lists will be posted on the lobby door of the Parish Community Center after school on the announced at tryouts.

D. Attend a pre-season meeting with the Athletic Director and a School Administrator.

E. The coach must conduct a pre-season meeting with parents , players, and the Athletic Director.

PARENTS’ AND PLAYERS’ INFORMATION

The Holy Family School Athletic Program strives to fulfill this mission by guiding the student athletes to develop good sportsmanship, teamwork, a spirit of healthy competition, and physical fitness; to acquire specific skills and strategies; and to have fun.

I. REQUIREMENTS FOR STUDENT PARTICIPATION

A. ACADEMIC AND CONDUCT REQUIREMENTS

1. A C average, without any grade of F, at both Progress Report and Report Card times is required. This refers to the day the Progress Report or the Report Card is issued to the student.

2. Consequences for not maintaining this requirement

a A written WARNING, issued by the Athletic Director after the Progress Report or the Report Card was distributed and to be signed by the student and the parent(s), informs the student that he/she has one week to raise the academic or conduct grade.

b. If the student does not raise the academic or conduct grade at the end of the one week period, that student is on PROBATION for one week. This means that the student goes to practice and participates in practice, but may not play in any games for that one week (seven days). Probation is granted once per sport per year.

c .If the student has not raised the academic or conduct grade at the end of the probationary period, that student is removed from the team.

B. MEDICAL REQUIREMENT: Each player must have a current, signed Medical Release Form on file before that player can participate in any practice or game.

C. A student may participate in only ONE Holy Family Sport per season.

II. REQUIREMENTS FOR PARENTS

A. Every family is required to work four (4) hours at games or tournaments played at Holy Family School. These hours count toward a family’s twenty hour obligation. If these hours have not been fulfilled or scheduled by the last two games of the season, the player will sit on the bench until they are fulfilled.

B. One parent/guardian must attend the pre-season meeting of the coaches, players, Athletic Director, and School Administrator.

C. Parents must understand that they are delegating supervisory authority for their child(ren) to the coaches during all practices and games. Any parental behavior which is contrary to this and which could be interpreted as uncivil by the officials could lead to a ban from practices and/or games.

D. Parents are to provide transportation for their children for all games and practices. Parents are to arrive on time and pick up on time.

1. Parents are NOT to allow siblings to attend practice without themselves.

E. Parents are to pay the non-refundable sports fee before a student may participate in a practice or game. This applies to each sport.

1. Uniforms are to be returned within one week after the end of the sport season in the same condition as they were received. If this rule is not observed, the student athlete will not receive any recognition (pin, certificate) for participating in the sport. Further, if the uniform is not returned by the next Report Card, the student will no receive the Report Card.

III. REQUIREMENTS OF TEAM MEMBERS

A. Practice Requirements: All players must meet the requirements set by the coaches and the PAL for practices and games.

1. The player must phone the coach in advance if a practice or game will be missed. The player must obtain any information given at a missed event.

2. Athletes who have missed a practice due to participation in an outside athletic team will not be allowed to start in the next game. Athletes who have missed a game due to participation in an outside athletic team will not be allowed to play in the next game, whether that game is a league game or a tournament game.

B. School Attendance: Players may not participate in a game or practice on a day when they have been absent from school for more than three and a half hours of class. If the absence occurs on a Friday, the student will not be allowed to play in any league or tournament game on Saturday.

C. Playing Time: Players will play in every game unless they are being disciplined for breaking a team or school rule.

1. Competitive Teams: The amount of individual playing time is determined by ability, game situations, attitude, and adherence to rules.

2. Recreational Teams: The coaches will attempt to play each team member approximately one quarter.

IV. CONFLICT RESOLUTION POLICY: In the event a player has a issue with a coach, the player and the parent(s) will take the following steps after an initial twenty-four “cooling off” period.

A. The player and parent(s) will contact the coach, who will make an appointment to meet the player and parent(s) to discuss the issue.

B. If the issue is not resolved at this meeting, then the player and parent(s) will ask the Athletic Director to arrange a meeting of all parties plus the Athletic Director.

C. Should the issue still not be resolved, all those involved will meet with a School Administrator at a time scheduled by the Athletic Director.
